How to Make Your Home Energy Efficient.

Blog

The effects of global warming have made people environmentally conscious. Therefore, most modern home designs include an aspect of energy efficiency.  In the extract below, you will learn how you can make your home energy efficient.

Lighting

Incorporate natural lighting in your home to reduce the need for lights during the day. Below are a few ways to improve your home's lighting.

  1. Install large windows in areas that face the sun.
  2. Sheers are multifunctional. They will not only ensure privacy but also let in light.
  3. Strategically place reflective surfaces such as mirrors and bright appliances to redirect light to dark areas.
  4. Your home should have wide hallways and staircases.
  5. Install skylights in your roof to increase natural light during the day and at night.

Heating

Insulated walls and windows will keep your house cool during hot weather and warm during cold weather. If you live in a warm area, plant trees near the house to provide shade and reduce the need for cooling.

Appliances

Your home appliances should be energy-efficient. Most manufacturers use a star rating system to inform buyers of the equipment's efficiency. Your air conditioning system should have a thermostat to help you control the heat. Some modern systems are will automatically shut down when a person leaves the room. Use energy-efficient LED bulbs as opposed to incandescent bulbs.

Power

Consider renewable sources of energy such as solar power to heat and light up your home. Although a solar power system may be expensive to install, you will enjoy its long term benefits since you will no longer pay electricity bills. If you produce more power than you require, you earn cash by exporting it to the national grid.

Construction

You should also conserve energy as you put up the structure. Below are a few ways to achieve this.

  • Use sustainably sourced timber to build your home.
  • Consider recycled construction materials such as aggregate, steel bars, PVC and gypsum.
  • Ask your contractor to use energy-efficient equipment during construction.
  • Conserve and reuse water during construction.

Once you move into your home, encourage your family members to be environmentally conscious. For instance, you could save on energy by doing laundry two or three times a week as opposed to daily. You could also ask them to switch off appliances and lights when they are not in use.

Energy-efficient home designs help reduce your household's carbon footprint. Using ample lighting, good insulation, energy-efficient appliances, renewable energy and sustainable construction tactics are sure ways to make your house energy efficient.

Calvin's Consulting Blog

Hi! My name is Calvin. If you have ever wondered if you need advice, the chances are you may have needed a consultant. For a long time, I didn't think that I needed a consultant, so I would try and solve my own problems. However, I eventually, I had to admit that there were somethings that not even I could solve. My brother recommended a very cool consultant who has helped me to get my business running by giving me some very shrewd advice. Since then, I have used consultants for everything from buying a property to considering my next business investment. I hope you find my blog useful.
